Alchemy: The Czech Lands and Rudolfine Prague.
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The tradition of alchemical research in Bohemia goes back to the fourteenth century. It continued throughout the sixteenth century, and by the time Emperor Rudolf II came to power, he found fertile soil ready to support his interest in alchemy. The chapter discusses the role of Hájek and his relations with other scholars. It deals with an inf luential group of educated physicians at the imperial court who were involved in chymiatric medicine in Prague, although they were not Paracelsians themselves. Hájek was convinced of the importance of astrology in the production of medicines and for alchemy itself. This is also evidenced by Hájek’s Herbarz, a Czech reworking of Mattioli’s commentarieson Dioscorides.
