Picturing the Passion: Devotional Strategies in the Passional of Abbess Kunigunde.

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The manuscript known in the research as the Passional of the Abbess Cunigunde presents a richly illuminated genuine selection of texts which concentrate on the Passion of Christ. Originated in the first decades of the 14th century for the Benedictine nunnery at the Prague Castle, the manuscript contains the allegorical tract De strenuo milite followed by an explanation. Here, the author describes each of the weapons that wounded Christ’s body and made him suffer. The textual narrative is both introduced and finished by a whole page depiction of arma Christi. Isolated from the narrative context, both the depictions become an imago agens, an active image that is capable to move the subject and stimulate the reader’s mind through visual or emotional shock.nIn the first part of the paper, we focus on the visual characteristics of these folios to reconstruct devotional strategies which were particularly connected with the Passion devotion in a female audience. Herewith, we pick up with the conference subtitle “affecting and being affected” to show an example of medieval modus operandi in meditating the mystical in the Passion.nThe second part of the paper concentrates on a German translation of the Passional of the Abbess Cunigunde dated back to the early 18th century. The translation comprises all the texts in the manuscript, including the tituli, which accompany the illuminations. As an ekphrasis, it even describes all the depictions of the codex. Besides, additional liturgical elements (verses, hymns, sequences, prayers, and church songs) supplement the translation. In addition, dialogical structures influenced by passion plays, enhance the texts with dramatic elements to evoke compassion. In this part, the paper briefly presents how these texts move the reader emotionally with other means in the changing media and historical context.n
