In this study we compared changes in extracelullar space diffusion parameters of adult rat somatosensory cortex with changes in energy-related metabolites and glutamate during transient hypoxia/ischemia induced by unilateral carotid ligation and concomitant reduction of inspired oxygen for 30 minutes. Our results show dramatic changes in size and geometry of extracelullar space of somatosensory cortex which best correlate with changes in extracelullar concentration of glutamate.
