In this introduction to special issue of Protoplasma dedicated to exploration of cellular structures and functions editors provide commentary to reviews that are commited to this goal. Reviews are covering microscopy of DNA replication, chromatin remodeling, DNA damage repair, involvement of intronic promoters in disease as well as regulation of tubulin isotypes and intercellular crosstalk in melanoma. Additional contributions cover role of perinuclear actin in migrating cells, signaling pathways in polarized cells and role of macrophages and lymphocytes in inflammation.
