Die Studie beschäftigt sich mit der kritischen Tätigkeit des Literaturhistorikers und Germanisten Arnošt Kraus (1859-1943), der als erster Professor für deutsche Literatur an der „Böhmischen“ Universität in Prag tätig war. Kraus, eine habituell kritisch und journalistisch orientierte Persönlichkeit, basierte auf einer realistischen Bewegung von TG Masaryk und verfolgte fast sechzig Jahre lang das Thema seines beruflichen Interesses – die deutsche Literatur – im breiteren Kontext des böhmischen Kulturlebens, in dem er eine Reihe von Kontroversen in beiden Sprachmilieus. Der Autor reflektiert auch seine Art der Argumentation und Selbstreflexion seiner Bemühungen.

The study deals with the critical activity of the literary historian and expert in German studies Arnošt Kraus (1859-1943), who worked as the first professor of German literature at the Czech University in Prague. Kraus, a personality habitually critically and journalistically oriented, was based on a Realistic movement of T. G. Masaryk followed for nearly sixty years the subject of his professional interest - German literature – in the broader context of Czech cultural life, in which he provoked a number of controversies in both language milieus. The author also reflects on his way of argumentation and self-reflection of his efforts.
