Die Studie bietet einen umfassenden Überblick über die Entwicklung der tschechoslowakischen Avantgarde vom Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Im Mittelpunkt stehen die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Literatur, bildender Kunst, Architektur, Film, Fotografie und Theater sowie die spezifischen ästhetischen Konzepte des Poetismus, Konstruktivismus und Surrealismus. Der Text beleuchtet die Rolle zentraler Künstlergruppen und Persönlichkeiten in Böhmen und der Slowakei und zeigt, wie internationale Impulse mit lokalen kulturellen und politischen Bedingungen verbunden wurden. Die Avantgarde erscheint dabei als dauerhaftes, intermediales und gesellschaftlich engagiertes Projekt.
