Meziválečná populární literatura nepřestává ani po skoro sto letech inspirovat a provokovat: někdy přitahuje zdánlivou naivitou, jindy zase strhne napínavým dějem. Současně ale naše poznání této rozlehlé a nepřehledné krajiny zůstává jen velmi neúplné. Kniha Čtivo. Díla a kontexty české populární literatury 1918–1939 nabízí prvního ucelenějšího průvodce po jejích vrcholech i pádech, druzích i oblastech. Kromě osmi výkladových kapitol, přehledově se zaměřujících na vybrané charakteristiky (žánry, témata, publikační platformy) a způsoby čtení (gender, ideologie, transfer) populární literatury, přináší přehledné kalendárium a zejména dvacet interpretačních studií konkrétních textů, ze kterých vysvítá pestrost a originalita dobového čtiva. Jako každý správný průvodce, ani naše kniha nechce a nemůže své téma vyčerpat, nabízí ale mnoho tipů, kudy a kam se při poznávání tohoto „zlatého věku“ české populární literatury vypravit.

Something to Read: Works and Contexts in Czech Popular Literature 1918–1939, is the primary output of the project Czech Popular Literature 1918–1939 in Outline: Works and Contexts, supported by a grant from the Czech Science Foundation (20-09848S). Inspired by the reader-friendly yet meticulously researched and relevant handbooks and companions available in the English-speaking world, it provides a general, summarized, and topic-oriented introduction to the field, as well as interpretive case studies based on the example of a single work. The book does not offer a comprehensive history of interwar popular literature or propose any new theoretical or conceptual framework for its analysis. Instead, it aims rather more modestly to present the variety and multiformity of events in popular literature during the period adopting an approach that is as synthetic as possible – one, however, that necessarily implies a certain degree of fragmentariness and selectivity. Dealing with various aspects of popular literature and literary circulation, it is therefore open to various different ways of reading, depending on the intentions with which readers approach it and what they hope to find there. The book opens with a detailed timeline: a unique attempt to capture the temporal dimension and processuality of events shaping developments in the field of popular literature. The following section, Contexts, consists of eight chapters that aim to capture some of the more general characteristics and connections of interwar popular literature. The third section of the book, serving a vital role vis-à-vis the text-centric project as a whole, is the Works section. This includes twenty interpretative chapters focusing on the interpretation and contextualization of individual literary texts.
