Nordböhmen gilt als eines der ältesten Zentren der Hinterglasmalerei in den böhmischen Ländern. Sie ist mit den dortigen alten Glastraditionen verbunden, deren Wurzeln in das Mittelalter reichen. Die ersten Hersteller von Hinterglasbildern waren Glasmaler die in der Nähe von Glashütten wirkten und Provinzmaler deren Werke für die individualisierte Malerhandschrift und Bestrebung nach illusionistischerer Malart charakteristisch sind. Die typischste nordböhmische Warenart repräsentieren Bilder des sog. Glashüttentyps (Goldschliff- und Spiegelschliffbilder). Diese volkstümlichen Hinterglasbilder weisen bestimmte Parallelen mit dem Schaffen des bedeutsamen handwerklichen Malers Vinzenz Janke (1769 – 1838) aus Nový Bor (Hayda).

Northern Bohemia is considered to be the centre of the oldest paintings on glass on the Czech territory. It is connected with the glassmaking tradition in that region dateing back to the Middle Ages. The first producers of the reverse glass paintings were there the glass painters living near glass smelters and the provincial painters. Their workes are usually characterised by individualised style and endeavour for more illusive painting. The most typical northbohemian pieces are pictures of the so- called „glassmaking type“ . These are pictures where painted parts are combined with ground mirror or black background. These folk paintings show a similarity to paintings of Vincenz Janke (1769-1838), who was an important craft painter from Nový Bor.
