The paper addresses the issue of the role of language similarity in language contact. Difficulties in measuring this variable are presented and commented on. Contrary to the traditional claim that similarity facilitates transfer between languages it is argued that it may act differently depending on the types of transfer in language contact as delimited in the language contact theory developed by Van Coetsem.
