This article, reflecting the recent biography of George Kennan by John Lewis Gaddis, examines the role that one of the major architects of the U.S. post-war foreign policy played in the process of the division of Europe. It further touches upon Kennan'sviews about Czechoslovakia's developments in the 1940s. The article concludes that although Kennan was undoubtedly a brilliant thinker and analyst, he was less useful as a policy adviser and his recommendations for U.S. policy toward Eastern and CentralEurope contributed to the Soviet hegemony in the region in the wake of World War II and its perpetuation throughout the Cold War era.
