Imagining Nuclear Future in Socialist Poland. Plans and Dreams
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The main purpose of the study „Imagining nuclear future in socialist Poland: plans and dreams“ is to reconstruct the optimistic faith in nuclear energy and its potential, which was dominant in Polish approach to this subject in the 1950s. We use examples from contemporary discourse found in popular publications, newspapers, journals, and official government documents. First, we try to show how the potential of nuclear energy was seen in the 1950s in relation to coal. Then we describe Polish “nuclear dreams”, i.e. ideas about possible use of nuclear energy in an “atomic age” and specific Polish plans for the construction of a nuclear power plant. Finally, we investigate to what extent Polish ideas about nuclear energy were specific to our country and whether they were just a reaction to a worldwide phenomenon, the one that could be found in many other countries, including Czechoslovakia.
