Antisemitic Discourse in Czechoslovak Daily Newspaper Rudé právo from 1951 to 1953
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This article examines the antisemitic discourse in the Czechoslovak daily newspaper Rudé Právo from 1951 to 1953, with a particular focus on the Rudolf Slánský trial. The trial, which took place in November 1952, was a highly publicized event that became a peak of public antisemitism in Czechoslovakia. Despite frequent public declarations by state authorities that antisemitism had no place in communist societies, Rudé právo constantly demonstrated hostile attitudes towards Jews, Israel, and Zionism. The article analyzes the language used in Rudé právo to show how antisemitic discourse was subtly inserted into the newspaper's content. The analysis focuses on the appraisal pattern JEWS ARE BAD by combining two approaches towards stancetaking in discourse: lexical-semantic and systemic functional. The results of the analysis show that this appraisal pattern is based on five complex postulates that indicate that the condemned people are conspirators and traitors, because being a Jew implies supporting Zionist organizations, which means collaboration with and support of the imperialist enemies. The findings of the study thus demonstrate the persistence of antisemitic attitudes in communist societies, challenging the traditional notion that communist ideology eradicates all forms of prejudice by promoting the equality of all people.
