Ce chapitre examine la compatibilité de deux intuitions, celle selon laquelle, dans les directives visant à faire face à la pénurie de lits d’hôpitaux, le critère d’âge n’a pas été pris assez au sérieux, et celle selon laquelle nous avons failli à nos obligations envers nos aînés au vu de la mortalité observée dans les EHPAD dans le cadre de la pandémie de Covid-19. Les spécificités du critère d’âge sont discutées, ainsi que ses liens complexes avec l’idée d’égalité en vies complètes. Nous comparons les approches italienne, belge et suisse sur le critère d’âge en contexte de pénurie. Et nous justifions la compatibilité entre une préoccupation pour la situation dans les EHPAD et l’adoption d’un égalitarisme en vies complètes.

This chapter examines the compatibility of two intuitions. The first one is that, in the directives aiming at facing the shortage in hospital beds, the age criterion has not been take seriously enough. The other is that we failed to take proper care of the elderly members of our societies, given the high mortality rates observed in the elderly care homes in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. I discuss the specificities of the age criterion and its complex links with the idea of equality over complete lives. I compare the Italian, Belgian and Swiss approaches on the age criterion in such a shortage context. And I justify the compatibility between worrying about the situation in care homes and adopting complete life egalitarianism.
