A Brief History of the Development of Scientific Instruments for Ionospheric and Magnetospheric Research, Magion Satellites
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
A brief history of the development of scientific instruments for the ionospheric and magnetospheric research at the Geophysical Institute (IG) and Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) is presented. Ionospheric research started at the IG in the mid-fifties, when the Ionospheric Department was established. The International Geophysical Year further accelerated the ionospheric research. The sixties provide the first opportunity of exploiting satellite data. The establishment of INTERCOSMOS in 1967 was agreat opportunity to take part in space research and to build own scientific instruments for in-situ measurements. During the seventies and eighties more than 20 instruments were constructed. This great period culminated in the five MAGION satellite series. The first one was launched in 1978, weighed 14.5 kg and carried out two scientific experiments. The last one, MAGION 5, weighing 68.5 kg, carried 15 scientific instruments from 7 countries.
