The paper describes Czech systems, research and activities concerning inventory, documentation, interpretation, presentation and publication of cultural heritage, namely of architectural monuments and sites. Results of a recent research project into development of a new documentation system suitable for small historic cities is described in a detail and accompanied with an example of a micro-regional GIS approach integrating natural and cultural heritage features. The above described documentation system has been designed with a strong emphasis on applicability in historic villages and cities. Special layers of the GIS structure are therefore devoted to digital plans of architectural objects, presented in CAD format. It improves capability of the system for historic analyses as well as designing of changes in individual objects and easy visualisation of impacts, 3D modelling etc
