The paper presents an optical method for evaluation of the state of surface of the cultural heritage objects. The technique is based on statistical evaluation of brightness and colour saturation characteristics obtained from scans of the object's surfaceacquired on-site by portable scanner. Repetitive application of the method at the same location of the monument surface enables for monitoring of the studied statistical parameters, analyzing their trends and predicting the time when a surface degradation threshold value will be reached triggering the need for repair or maintenance intervention.
