Scarf joint for replacement of decayed rafter ends: experimental investigation of bearing capacity under combined loading
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The paper deals with experimental investigation of bearing capacity of timber lapped scarf joint intended for replacement of rafter ends decayed by moisture-related attack. Such a connection is loaded predominantly in the combination of bending and compression because of a member role in the roof structure. Thus, three groups and a group of reference samples have been tested in different combinations of normal/bending force. The tests conducted to verify the design model of the connection show relatively high values (28%) of bearing capacity when compared to the full profile of old wood. Experiments show little influence of the compressive force on the bearing capacity in bending. High compressive normal force with negligible momentum is typical for rafters in medieval wooden structures and for the ones the joint is especially intended. The result allows the use of the joint in many cultural heritage sites where the value of the original material is significant and minimal interventions are required in order to preserve the original state of the building.
