Physical properties and their characterisation
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
There are several reasons for recording the physical properties of historic substrates. Firstly they provide the restorer with the data necessary for the selection of appropriate materials and technologies compatible with the historical substrate from a physical perspective. In addition they help to provide evidence to inform the initial decision concerning the feasibility of any intended intervention, for example, the degree of penetrability of the selected agent into the treated material. In situ tests are also important for quality control and assessment of the treatment efficiency. Finally, the physical testing creates a basis for long term monitoring of historical objects. In the field of conservation the following properties are typically investigated: Material density and specific weight, specific porosity (microstructure), mechanical characteristics, wave propagation, water transport and retention.
