    Architectural surfaces include a variety of decoration means and works of art, often found in heritage structures and applied in walls, floors and roofs. They usually refer to murals, mosaics (wall and floor), reliefs, as well as plasters and renders. They consist of the decorative surface and the substrate, firmly attached to the substructure (wall, roof, floor). The substrate is usually characterised by a multilayer structure, formed by 2-4 mortar layers, whilst its stratigraphy and typology depend on the decorative type (mural, wall or floor mosaic) and the wider technological aspects of each historic era and region. The thickness of the mortar layers was usually reduced to the outer surface, as well as the aggregates size and proportion. Mortar layers were mainly based on lime, including pozzolanic materials (natural and artificial), as well as other additives and admixtures (i.e. pieces of wood, reed, straw, natural resins). The aim was to enhance their overall performance, including volume stability, strength and resistance to humidity. Such aspects guaranteed the durability of the architectural surfaces, towards time, environmental conditions and loading (in the case of floors). Nowadays they often confront several damages, concerning delamination and detachment of the mortar layers, both in their interface or in their conjunction with the substructure. This may be attributed to voids and discontinuities created in the mortar layers, due to multiple reasons (i.e. cracking, humidity, materials’ deterioration). During conservation, a significant goal is to re-attach the mortar layers, stabilize their structure and fill the voids. To this direction, grouting is widely applied, concerning an irreversible, on-site repair technique, requiring specialized personnel (scientists and technicians), accurate application and highly effective injection materials. Usually, custom-made and ready-mixed grouts are used, taking into account the issues of compatibility with the existing building materials. To this direction, lime-based grouts are applied, whilst their fresh and hardened state properties guarantee their performance, applicability and efficacy.
