Physical characteristics of sandstone types extracted from Bohemian historic quarries

This paper presents the results of detailed physical testing of seven typical sandstone types historically used in buildings across the Bohemian region. These include Božanov (arkose sandstone), Žehrovice (arkose), Droba (wacke sandstone, unknown quarry), Hořice (quartz sandstone), Libná (quartz sandstone with glauconite), Nehvizdy (quartz sandstone), and Petřín (quartz sandstone), identified by their quarry names. Test specimens were prepared from damaged sandstone blocks removed from the masonry railing of the Charles Bridge in Prague prior to their replacement. Having been exposed to prolonged weathering on the bridge, the stones provided both sound and degraded material for evaluation. Mechanical properties were assessed using standard specimens as well as non-standard thin plates designed to capture the effects of the rock’s heterogeneous structure and its deteriorated surface layers. Deflection data from three-point flexural tests were used to determine the static modulus of elasticity and compare it with the dynamic modulus. The static modulus was calculated with respect to the sandstone’s non-linear load response, and differences between tangential and secant moduli were analysed. The laboratory investigations also included measurements of thermal and hydric expansion coefficients, water absorption, and porosity. These results were compared with those obtained from non-destructive or considerately destructive tests, namely near-surface cohesion assessed by micro-drilling resistance and ultrasonic propagation velocity. The study contributes to established methods for examining historic materials during the preparatory phase of restoring damaged sandstone structures and offers reference data for material assessment, practical applications, and numerical modelling.
