The past time in Civil Engineering was characterized by a design of structures based on simple, traditional procedures. In recent years a number of economical aspects as well as the reliability methods have been included in the design and the construction process. While the safety problem is usually resolved by the Ultimate Limit State design and the financial assessment is included as a minimization of the weight of a structure, the user's point of view is usually reflected by the Serviceability LimitState or simulation based-methods. Our particular interest in this research area is the automated optimal design of steel-reinforced concrete beams. To give the reliable picture of a structure behavior, efficient procedures for fast evaluation of internal forces for a general cross-section and an arbitrary stress-strain relationship has been implemented.
