Sandstones were often used as a mainly historical building material in the Czech Republic. As any other building material they undergo weathering processes and so are damaged. There are described the basic factors of weathering processes and their influence on the durability of sandstones in this article. Study of these processes is very important for the understanding of the rate of decay and also for the estimation of redevelopment arrangements during reconstruction of the heritage buildings. The range of the deterioration of rock depends on the petrography (internal structure, mineral composition, type of cementation etc.) and on the changes initiated. For the simulation of weathering processes, which are typical for Prague climatic conditions, thedata from winter season during last ten years were used.
