Along with the intensive support of low-energy and passive housing the ratio between the impacts of construction and operational stages of a building is decreasing. Primary energy consumption and resulting emissions related to "building fabrication" aregaining in importance. To achieve the real low energy or passive level of the building, the materials should also meet certain "low energy" or "passive environmental standard", i.e. to have the lowest possible impact on the environment.The paper deals with the development of a new web-based catalogue of building materials and structures (Envimat) for new buildings and renovations, which contains their environmental as well as technical characteristics. Moreover it describes the methodology used for getting the data, the structure of the database and the resulting catalogue, and outlines the benefits of such tool for construction practice.
