Small hydropower gained an important role in energy sector especially with respect to green technologies development. Sophisticated hydrological procedures are used for correct sizing of hydro power plant. Several interesting marginal application fieldsof small hydropower were discussed, e.g. drinking water systems and irrigation systems were mentioned. Even small hydropower schemes need to be well designed specially with respect to transients, e.g. water hammer effect and runaway speed of turbine sets. Several applications of water hammer calculations and oscillations of water in equation chamber were presented. Energy production calculations were made with respect to sensitivity analyzes to nominal parameters setting. Advanced 3D flow modeling enables optimization of hydraulic structures such as intakes, weirs, piers etc. Hydraulic steel structures such as flap gates can be analyzed using fluid-structure interaction method.
