Air ducts as an additional protection of buildings against moisture - is it sustainable solution?

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The effort to effective sustainable solution of refurbishment of existing buildings is one of the core components of the concept of sustainable development, which counts among the current topics in the building industry. One of the major problems is an additional protection of buildings against the negative effects of moisture. Currently the air ducts are implemented on a number of buildings. Their effectiveness has been verified by much practical experience. Despite this fact, however, there still remains a lot of confusion regarding their actual effect on the rehabilitated structure. The expected effect of remediation is often different to the reality, which can have a negative impact on the desired moisture reduction of structure and hence a use of the building. In certain cases, it is yet necessary to make an additional protection against moisture. Consequently, there is an inefficient spending of financial resources, which is contradictory to the concept of sustainable building. The paper focuses on a specific example of a building affected by moisture, where a longitudinal air duct was designed to reduce moisture in the structure. The paper also describes the results of a comparative analysis of the expected and actual effects on the rehabilitated construction after five years since the renovation. It also includes a final assessment of the success of the remediation and determines the degree of effectiveness of rehabilitation methods that are applied to the building. These findings may help to eliminate the possible failure of rehabilitation interventions in the future.
