Identifying suitable regions for high-resolution weather product based on remote sensing with telecommunication networks
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Cities of the future need better weather observations than currently available to cope with weather-related challenges from heat, snow and rainfall. In this contribution, we suggest a screening method to identify regions suitable for high-quality weather sensing based on Cellular Microwave Links (CML) from telecommunication networks. We test our approach on the example of rainfall monitoring analysing several datasets from Europe and Canada. We find that CMLs generally provide good spatial coverage and observe rainfall with sufficient precision for hydrological applications. This is more the case for urban areas (>1 CML/km2), and less in rural areas (<0.02 CML/km2). We also find that suitable regions can be predicted efficiently from population densities, at least for our networks in Western Europe. Environmental observations from CML networks will therefore enable cities of the future to more successfully cope with challenges such as urban flooding than we do today.
