Measure for Bridges Safety Management Improvement

Traffic infrastructure is a part of critical infrastructure in each country. To its critical elements, the bridges on roads and railways belong. The article deals with the causes, which disturb the safety of bridges on the roads. It is based on the concept of safety management of complex technical facilities. By analysis of world data sources, it was creat-ed the database, which includes the data about the failure of bridges in the world. By arrangement of causes of bridge failures, the sources of risks are found. The further analysis that used the bridge objects defects catalogue in the Czech Republic provides the causes of risks that undermine the bridges reliability. The comparison of both risk sources lists shows that the list of risks learned from the bridge’s safety concept is greater than the list of risks learned from the bridge’s reliability concept; in the second one, there are missing the risk sources connected with the maintenance and the bridge operation management. Considering the concept of advanced risk management of com-plex technical facilities directed to their safety, there are given the suggestions of measures for the bridges safety management improvement in the Czech Republic, as bridge monitoring, bridge management system and risk man-agement plan.
