Invetigation of Moisture Exchange and Shrinkage of Concrete with Different Water-Cement Ratio

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The paper deals with characteristics of moisture transfer and shrinkage of concrete with respect to variable water-cement ratio and cement content. An experiment including four different concrete mixtures with water-cement ratio in the range 0,25-0,52 was conducted at the Faculty of Civil Engineering CTU in Prague in order to provide unique set of data containing measurements of moisture loss, pore relative humidity profiles, self-desiccation, drying shrinkage and autogenous shrinkage. Specimen types were chosen carefully with respect to quantities which were desired to be determined experimentally. Characteristic sizes of used specimens (cubes, cylinders, slabs) varied between 10 to 30 cm. Surfaces of these specimens not intended to dry were sealed with synthetic resin. Measurements were carried out for the period of 419 day in uncontrolled environment, where ambient temperature and relative humidity were recorded every 5 minutes by datalogger. Using the set of measured data, qualitative and quantitative relations were determined between: 1) moisture loss and drying shrinkage, 2) ultimate self-desiccation and water-cement ratio, 3) ultimate moisture loss and water-cement ratio, 4) parts of shrinkage (autogenous, drying, total) and water-cement ratio. Also, the dependencies of these quantities on cement content of individual mixtures are analysed as well. An explanation for recorded early-age swelling is stated considering hypothesis published recently in the literature.
