These Guidelines have been produced by ANCOLD to update and extend the previous ANCOLD Guidelines on Tailings Dams - Planning, Design, Construction, Operation and Closure, 2012. The revised Guidelines were seen as necessary to maintain the relevance of the 2012 Guideline to highlight the consideration of risk through all aspects of the tailings dam life cycle and to add information and recommendation on Governance to improve Tailings Dam Safety. The Guidelines are intended to support existing guidelines such as “Leading Practice Tailings Management” one of a series of publications outlining Leading Practice Sustainable Development Program for the Mining Industry published by the Australian Government Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources (DITR, 2015).
