With the ever-increasing number of people in cities, comes the problem of ever-rising housing prices and their shortage. Housing costs are a specific variable that has a diverse impact on urban dwellers. There are two opposing trends: the cost of housing is rising with density, while transport costs are decreasing. This finding raises the question of whether more compact cities are more affordable for life, at least in view of these two expenditures, which consume about half of the household budget. Although there is compelling evidence of some of the benefits associated with high urban density, density does not bring benefits unless other important issues are addressed.
