    The Mock-up-Josef in-situ experiment was the first of its kind to be conducted in the Czech Republic. The main objective of the experiment was to demonstrate the performance of the disposal system that is planned to be used in the future Czech deep geological repository (DGR)for spent nuclear fuel(SNF). The main part of the system will comprise the various barriers that will serve to prevent the escape of radionuclides into the biosphere. The first barrier will consist of the waste disposal package (WDP), followed by a bentonite barrier and, finally, the surrounding rock mass. The experiment focused on both the demonstration of the whole of the system under realistic in-situ conditions and the monitoring of the various ongoing processes. The client was the Czech Radioactive WasteRepository Authority (SÚRAO) and the experiment was designed, constructed and operated by the Centre for Experimental Geotechnics, an experimental department of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague. The experiment was conducted in the Josef Underground Laboratory, which is located close to the village of Mokrsko in the Příbram region of the Czech Republic. The most important element of the experiment comprised a layer of bentonite (barrier) consisting of Czech calcium-magnesium bentonite. The layer was loaded with heat from a heating element (90°C), which served to simulate the radiation of heat from the WDP, and was saturated with water from the surrounding rock environment. The changes in the bentonite layer initiated by the thermal and hydrological loading were monitored via sensors that measured the development of pressure, temperature and relative humidity. A monitoring system to measure the propagation of heat was also installed in the rock surrounding the experiment. Samples were extracted during the course of the experiment from the loaded bentonite layer. The samples were evaluated in detail and no changes were discovered during the operation of the experiment that might potentially threaten the functioning of the bentonite barrier from the point of view of the safe disposal of SNF in the DGR environment. The data obtained is currently being used, for example, for the numerical modelling of the processes that took place within the bentonite and for enhancing the understanding of the issue of the propagation of heat under DGR conditions.
