Natural fibres as retardant of pozzolanic reaction in lime-based plasters

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

Lime plasters, one of the oldest building materials, have a relatively low strength, so it is appropriate to look for a suitable admixture to extend their strength and consequently also their durability. Moreover, in the case of historic plasters, such an admixture has further requirements for compatibility with the original material. Another aspect that should be taken into account when choosing an appropriate admixture is sustainability and the least possible impact on the environment. Natural fibres appear to be promising materials to meet all the above requirements. This paper investigates the performance of two representatives of natural fibres of plant origin in combination with three different lime-based plasters. It was proven, that attention should be paid especially to the kind of plaster to which these fibres were added. The same type of fibres reacted differently with pure lime, hydraulic lime and above all with pozzolanic-lime-based plaster. In the case of the first two mentioned matrices, wood and colza fibres caused an improvement in mechanical strength, while in the case of pozzolanic lime, significant retardation and deterioration of the pozzolanic reaction was observed. It has been shown that these natural fibres decompose in an alkaline environment of lime, leach monosaccharides and simultaneously bind calcium ions. As a result, they reduce the degree of pozzolanic reaction by half. To better understand this incompatibility, the effect of the fibres on the plaster structure was investigated in more detail by porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy and phase composition analysis (STA and XRD). Based on these analysis, the natural fibres with plant origin were found to be incompatible with pozzolanic lime-based plasters.
