Comprehensive physico-chemical analysis of waste-based ashes for “green” construction applications
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
In recent years, an increase in the incineration of municipal solid waste and biomass waste was apparent. Depending on the input waste materials and the combustion technological processes, the chemical composition and physical properties of the resulting ash vary considerably. Moreover, these ashes often contain hazardous substances such as heavy metals. In accordance with the principles of the circular economy and environmental protection, it is necessary to find an appropriate way of managing the ashes produced, based on knowledge of their real characteristics. In order to evaluate the possibility of using biomass waste ash and bottom ash from municipal solid waste incineration in the construction industry, a detailed analysis of their chemical and physical parameters was carried out. The characteristics studied were chemical composition by XRF, concentration of selected heavy metals, pozzolanic activity, particle size distribution, specific surface area, dry matter content, loss on ignition, specific density, powder density. The thermal stability of ashes was tested by thermogravimetry. Both ashes possess promising chemical and physical properties, with the exception of the high content of heavy metals. Before using them in the construction industry, it is necessary to select a suitable binder that would be able to immobilize the heavy metals present.
