Effect of plasma nitriding on the mechanical properties of the P/M mode VANADIS 6 steel was investigated. The three point bending strength, being considered as the measure for brittle iron-alloys, decreases as the thickness of nitrided layer increases. This is caused by the fact that the cleavage region appeares in nitrided areas and its thickness increases with the increasing temperature and/or time of nitriding.
