The paper describes an attempt at determination of a cause of cone center slipping in the tailstock quill of giant lathe ŠKODA SR (the maximum diameter of the cone center contact cone is 180mm) that occured during machining of an ectremely heavy workpiece of container CASTOR 440/84 intended for transport and storage of a spent nuclear fuel (during machining of this workpiece, the cone center was loaded with a vertical radial force equivalent to vertical working of a weight of mass approximately 80000kg).
