This paper describes the differences in fatigue lifetimes obtained for several otherwise identical series of riveted double-shear lap joints that were produced by two different companies. The differences are obvious, both for blind rivets and for full rivets, so the riveting force applied differently in each of the companies cannot be blamed. Various aspects of the riveted joints are analyzed, and the available output results of experimental analyses is provided. It is concluded that missing or incomplete deburring and the lower pre-stress induced along the rivet shank during riveting in the riveted joints are the most probable reason for the inferior fatigue lives.
