Recently, there has been an increase in demand for special wear-resistant cast irons for use in demanding applications such as blasting equipment, drilling systems, railway technology, and the defense industry, where materials are defined according to DIN 1695-81 Wear Resisting Cast Iron. However, this standard dates back to 1981, and customers are now placing higher demands on abrasion-resistant materials, not to mention the potential for using materials with better properties than those previously available. This is both from the perspective of increasing the service life of such products and in terms of mechanical properties. Therefore, the first study on the development of new types of abrasion-resistant cast irons (using different alloys and different heat treatments) will be presented here. Furthermore, a comparison will be presented between standard gravity investment casting (GIC) technology and the newly developed low-pressure investment casting (LPIC) technology.
