The article summarizes infrastructural components and services required by secure and reliable systems in the healthcare domain. The most important infrastructure service deals with unambiguous identification of all principals directly and indirectly involved in patient care. Advanced security services include other communication and application security services guaranteeing security, privacy, safety, and quality of data, processes and results. Especially application security services, such as privilege management, user management, role management, authorization, role-based access control, and audit are basic requirements. Typical requirements for healthcare applications include system availability, information integrity and reliability, sensitive data protection and misuse prevention. When assigning rights national data protection and healthcare legislation has to be respected - e.g. when passing data among health care providers.
