Feeder Setup Optimization in SMT Assembly

The feeder setup optimization is a part of Surface Mount Technology assembly process optimization. It consists of allocation of components to placement machines and sequencing of component placement. The goal of optimization is to balance the workload ofplacement heads, i.e. to maximize the production speed. We cooperated with EPCE Slaný company producing power steering controllers for car industry. A decision support system algorithm for SMT line operators was developed. Its purpose is to suggest changes in an existing feeder setup in order to improve the production performance. The SMT line considered in this paper is equipped with dual-delivery multi-station placement machines. The proposed algorithm resulting from a relaxed model of the problem isbased on constraint programming approach and its performance is tested on the optimization of one product type assembly. Production speed increase of 10.5 % was measured during production test.
