X-Ray Fluorescence in Research on the Curtural Heritage
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Radionuclide X-ray fluorescence analysis is a method which has many advantages for analysis of various historic artefacts. It is relatively cheap, sensitive, non-destructive, and allows measurements in-situ. On the other hand, it is limitated in sensitivity only to chemical elements regardless of a compound or chemical form. Moreover, light elements emitting soft X-rays cannot be measured, and to detect a wide range of elements, repeated measurements with various radiation sources need to be carried out. Even with these limitations, valuable information can be obtained about the composition of historic materials, from which data about origin and age can be derived. Analyses of wall paintings, ancient metal sculptures or old manuscripts provide a basisfor historic considerations, which is documented by the results for some objects belonging into the Czech cultural heritage. The results are very promising and expanding of our laboratory into more fields of the fine and applied arts can.
