PhD study programmes are generally considered as a preparation for a scientific career and, for the most academically gifted students, this should be an attractive high point in their university studies. This paper explains why PhD studies are not alwaysregarded as attractive in the conditions of the Czech universities at the present time. The situation in the Czech Republic can be certainly extrapolated to other national educational systems. The influence of various factors both from inside and outside the university must be considered when a PhD programme is designed, and its success depends not only on the quality of the scientific and research programme, the lecturers and supervisors, but also on the university's links with research institutes andindustry, and the state of the national (and international) employment.
