Compression of ps pulses by frequency up-conversion in nonlinear optical crystal cut for type II phase matching is a well established method, if one desires intense, sub-ps up-converted pulses. For efficient compression of 1 μm light, time predelay must be introduced between the ordinary and extraordinary input pulses and group velocity of generated second harmonic pulses νSHg must be in between the group velocities of fundamental pulses νFHg,o and νFHg,e [1]. This requirement is satisfied for example in (D)KDP crystal and Nd:glass laser pulses, where νSHg equals to the average of νFHg,o and νFHg,e For high repetition rate, high power Yb:YAG lasers, e.g. [2], crystals from KDP family are not suitable and borate crystals with better thermal properties have to be used.
