Landscape architecture has a long tradition in China. The main idea of the design concept is based on the strong relationship between man and nature. This idea is in accord with present demands of sustainable urban development. Other fundamental principles applied in the traditional landscape architecture are The Story of Peach Blossom Spring, World in a pot model, and Feng-Shui theory. The Story of Peach Blossom Spring can serve as the noble ideal for modern landscape design in China. The potential ofthese principles also outside of China is indicated in the study of the Chinese landscape architect and researcher Kongjian Yu. He revealed that landscape preferences across different macro-cultural urban groups are not so different as one can expect. Based on these studies it can be assumed that also techniques employed in the traditional landscape design could be employed in modern design of sustainable urban development.
