L’inclusion d’un nouveau bâtiment dans une structure urbaine existante et la création d’une relation synergique entre ce bâtiment et le lieu dans lequel il prend place demeure encore aujourd’hui une tâche architecturale majeure. Sachant que le critère de valeur le plus important en lien avec les nouvelles constructions n’est pas le bâtiment lui-même mais ce qui émane de lui vers son environnement, sa continuité avec l’espace public. Les passages représentent un des moyens pour mettre en place une telle interconnexion. Leur forte présence, notamment dans la première moitié du 20e siècle, est caractéristique de la ville de Prague : il est en ce sens possible de parler d’un vrai phénomène qui n’a pas son pareil dans le contexte des villes européennes de l’époque. Les passages rendent traversables de vastes blocs compacts du centre-ville et leur épais réseau constitue un système de communication parallèle. Dans quelle mesure leur création a-t-elle été consciemment initiée par les constructeurs et architectes ? S’est-il agit d’une conception urbanistique préméditée ? C’est à ces questions que la présente contribution tentera de répondre.

The inclusion of a new building in an existing urban structure and the creation of a synergistic relationship between this building and the place in which it takes place remains a major architectural task even today. Knowing that the most important criterion of value in connection with new constructions is not the building itself but what emanates from it towards its environment, its continuity with the public space. The passages represent one of the means for setting up such an interconnection. Their strong presence, especially in the first half of the 20th century, is characteristic of the city of Prague: in this sense it is possible to speak of a real phenomenon that has no equal in the context of European cities of the era. The passages make vast, compact blocks of the city center passable and their thick network forms a parallel communication system. To what extent was their creation consciously initiated by the builders and architects? Was it a premeditated urban design? This contribution will attempt to answer these questions.
