Pandemic COVID-19 from the Point of View of Members of Emergency Medical Services in the Czech and Slovak Republic

The topic of the chapter is the influence of the first and second wave of the pandemic in connection with COVID-19 disease on the psychosomatic state of Emergency Rescue Services employees in the Czech and Slovak Republic. Their profession is closely linked to tense moments of emergencies and crisis situations. Some situations are everyday experience for these employees (e.g. acute onset of symptoms of particular diseases, accidents, traffic accidents, etc.), but among other things, they also perform their profession in specific conditions that are new and unexplored for the whole of society (e.g. the current case of the pandemic in connection with COVID-19) and, as persons who worked in the so-called “first line” during the first and second wave of the pandemic, this has placed increased demands on them in all respects. With regard to the job classification, we were interested in the impact of the pandemic on the psychosomatic state of these employees. For the purposes of the research, a quantitative method of data collection was chosen, using a non-standardized anonymous questionnaire that was distributed electronically. The respondents of the questionnaire were not limited by gender, length of experience or education. The criterion for selection of respondents was their employment in the Czech and Slovak Emergency Rescue services and their deployment during the first and second waves of the COVID-19 pandemic. Research questions were set regarding specific factors affecting the psychosomatic state of these individuals and their perception of the risks associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of the work workload brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, due to fatigue, exhaustion, overwork, despair, mood slumps, burnout, health concerns, and infecting family and loved ones, was investigated. Analysis of the results was differentiated how perceptions of individual risks differed in the first and second waves of the pandemic. Factors entering and subsequently determining the process of pre-hospital care delivery were also mapped. The obtained data was further processed graphically and compared with the literature. The chapter also includes information on the possibilities of professional assistance to members of the outreach groups and recommended procedures to manage individual negative phenomena occurring in the provision of pre-hospital care.
