Reliability Analysis of Existing Post-Tensioned Concrete Bridge Affected by Corrosion

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

During the second half of the last century, a significant number of post-tensioned concrete bridges were constructed. However, many of these structures have not received adequate maintenance over their typical lifespan of approximately 50 years. As a result, these bridges are now exhibiting signs of deteri-oration, primarily due to leakages and subsequent corrosion, partly affected also by an insufficient concrete cover. This is why nowadays it is essential to assess the load-bearing capacity of these bridges, taking into account the effects of corrosion. This study presents a case study of the estimation of the load-bearing capacity of an existing post-tensioned concrete bridge constructed in 1964. In engineering practice, this assessment is typically conducted using the partial factor method, in accordance with current standards such as the Eurocodes and the Czech standards ČSN, which often impose stricter requirements than the original standards applied in the design phase. As the use of the partial factor method can sometimes result in conservative estimates of load-bearing capacity, a fully probabilistic analysis is conducted in this study. It allows for an adequate consideration of uncertainties related to survey outcomes and level of information about resistance, load effects, and corrosion effects. It is demonstrated that the probabilistic approach is less conservative and has the potential to provide higher estimates of the load-bearing capacity for existing post-tensioned bridges.
