    Integrating Resilience Principles into Green Building Rating Systems: Developing and Testing a Resilience Module within the SBToolCZ Framework

    The built environment faces growing vulnerability due to the increasing frequency and intensity of climate-related hazards. Despite these growing risks, most existing buildings lack adequate design and construction features to withstand such threats, highlighting an urgent need for adaptation strategies. While green building rating systems have been widely used to measure sustainability, they often lack resilience-focused criteria. This paper introduces an innovative Resilience Module designed to integrate seamlessly into existing green building rating systems, offering an approach that bridges the gap between sustainability and resilience. Developed as part of a doctoral thesis, the Resilience Module builds on shared principles identicied through a comprehensive literature review, revealing significant synergies between resilience and sustainability. The module is tailored for compatibility with various rating frameworks, with a particular focus on its application within the Czech national assessment system, SBToolCZ, which serves as a demonstration tool in this study – the Module has also been used as the foundation for developing the Resilient Building Tool within the EU-funded SuPeRBE project. Following integration, a case study application showcased the module’s impact on overall assessment results, with further insights from collaboration with the SBToolCZ research team to refine the framework's weighting. This adjusted version of SBToolCZ offers architects and designers a robust tool for advancing resilient, sustainable building practices. This paper thus demonstrates the feasibility and benefits of integrating resilience criteria into sustainability assessment systems.
