Since 2020, all new buildings in the European Union have been required to meet the standards of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEB), which aim to significantly reduce energy consumption while promoting the use of renewable energy sources, also in line with the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive for the decarbonisation of the building sector. In the Czech Republic, NZEB standards have been progressively enforced since 2016, with stricter regulations coming into effect in 2022. These standards challenge building owners and developers to enhance energy efficiency, minimize operational impacts, and reduce both embodied and operational carbon emissions. A growing trend is emerging in the healthcare sector, where energy consumption levels are notably high, to explore the feasibility of achieving net-zero energy. This paper presents a case study of the Karviná Health Centre, a four-story public healthcare building undergoing renovation to meet the NZEB standard as part of the ARV European project (2022-2025). The renovation includes improvements such as enhanced insulation, window replacement, and photovoltaic panel installation. Through a burden-free life cycle assessment (LCA), the environmental impacts of the refurbishment are evaluated for different energy refurbishment scenarios. The results highlight the potential for substantial reductions in energy demand and carbon emissions, underscoring the importance of integrating energy-efficient design with renewable energy solutions to achieve sustainable building performance.
