The challenging environment of the manufacturing domain causes many obstacles during production. The complex products are challenging to model, and these models are typically tough to adapt, share, and reuse. On the other hand, the complexity of production systems means a significant problem during their design and deployment by legacy approaches. Thus, there is a need for the exploitation of versatile and flexible formats with sufficient expressivity as well as tools. Semantic web technologies and ontologies seem to be suitable for tackling with challenges mentioned above. This report describes the term ontology together with semantic web technologies, which serve as languages for interchanging ontological data. Next, ontologies implemented in OWL for product and production process are introduced - Cyber-Physical System Ontology for Components Integration, DIGICOR Core Ontology, and Product-Process-Resource Ontology. Then, the utilization of these ontologies is demonstrated using several use-cases. Finally, it is shown genetic algorithms are suitable for production plan optimization together with such knowledge description.
