Simultaneous Volume and Enthalpy Relaxation Response Initiated by Temperature Down-Jump

The volume and enthalpy relaxation, so called structural relaxation or physical aging phenomenon were measured after temperature down-jump from equilibrium above glass transition temperature to glassy state. The tested materials were PMMA, PS, amorphousPET and PMMA filled with carbon black. Mercury-in-Glass Dilatometer was employed for volume relaxation measurements and Perkin-Elmer DSC 1 Pyris was used for enthalpy relaxation measurements. The relaxation data were collected from minutes after temperature jump to nearly a month. It was found that enthalpy and volume relax by very similar way, which means that constant relationship between both quantities can be found defined one time independent ratio over relaxation times of above described experimental window. It was found that its value is close to the inversion value of compressibility measured by direct compression giving value for tested polymers to be around 2GPa.
